Scaring Evil Spirits
To guard the grave and the soul's po, we have included a Guardian figurine like this one—so fierce it will scare any evil spirit away. We also hope that it will keep the tomb safe from anyone who comes to rob it of its treasures.

Because times are good, the families of many wealthy men and women include mingqi in their tombs when they die. Mingqi are made in factories. The clay is pressed into molds, fired in a kiln, and then the figure is painted or glazed. If it is glazed, it is fired a second time after the glaze is applied. Ordinary people do not have elaborate tombs like people from wealthy families, but may include a few items in their graves that are important to them.
